Southeast ChampionshipsSoutheast district leader John Woolschlager reports on the Championship regatta ...
The Southeast Championship was held in conjunction with the Low Country Regatta at the Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club in Beaufort South Carolina from June 21-23. Although the weather was near monsoon conditions, the sailors that braved the weather enjoyed great racing, wonderful food, and many good times. Friday was had intermittent rain, but the wind was fairly steady and we got in 5 great races. Saturday started out with less rain, but the wind was not as consistent, making sailing in the strong currents more challenging. A brief storm rolled in toward the end of the second race on Saturday, producing winds to 30-35 knots, capsizing several boats, including my own boat. Linda and I got our boat back up, but the boat rolled over again due to the strong winds. When we got our boat back up, the mast was broken and our deck was cracked. I heard that 3 other boats (not JYs) lost their masts that day. Certainly some of the most exciting sailing I have done, although the cost was a bit high. The regatta ended up well on Sunday. The weather looked like rain as boats were launched, so everyone had their rain gear on. Of course, 10 minutes after the fleet shoved off the sun broke through and most wound up stripping the rain gear back off only to get sunburned. One humorous side note Sunday the Sea Island 1 Designs all towed large alligator pool floats about 15 feet behind them. Which made it interesting for port tack boats that needed to duck the starboard tack floats. John Potter said it was the first time he ever had an inside overlap on an alligator. Through all of these challenging conditions, including the alligators, John Potter from Beaufort won the regatta with 12 points. The full results are listed below:
Potter 12 pts.
Mumma 17 pts.
Putnam 20 pts.
Samuel 35 pts.
Woolschlager 44 pts.
Clough 49 pts.
Following the races, we were met with wonderful food made by club members, beer and wine on Friday, and Frogmore Stew, BBQ, beer and wine, and live music on Saturday night. Thanks to all that participated in the regatta and a special thanks to the Beaufort Y&S Club for hosting a first class event.
(ed. In spite of his broken mast John is doing a great job of getting the Southeast district organized with an new newsletter and ongoing efforts to identify fleet captains and keep JY sailors in the district informed - Thanks John!)
Regattas
We are now in the heart of the regatta season with many major events scheduled over the next month. Here's a rundown:
The Connecticut State Championships are July 6 in Westbrook CT. Check out the link for the notice of race at http://www.diyc.com/race/jy15_ctstatenor.pdf
The Midwest Championships are scheduled for July 13 & 14 in Pymatuning Ohio. Gary Edelman, our Midwest district leader guarantees this will be a great event. There are some big fleets in the area so we are looking for a big turnout. This is the "Sam Meyers Memorial Regatta" as well and many other classes will be in attendance including Fireball, Force5, JY15, Sunfish, Catamaran, Javelin, Flying Scot. That should make it pretty interesting. You can view the Notice of Race at http://my.core.com/~gmacys/PSC-Sam_Myer.htm
The SAYRA Inshore championships are scheduled for July 19-21. Check out the race notice at SAYRA In shore
July 27&28 is the date for the Rochester Canoe club's JY15 invitational regatta. Fleet 77, on the shores of Lake Erie NY. This is home to our intrepid JY secretary Carol Fritz and her husband Gary. Dan and Jean Blasdell, longtime JY sailors are planning a great event featuring many short races (good news for those who are not up to hiking for 30 minutes straight on a long upwind beat) Their notice of race has all the details at Rochester Canoe club
The Newport Regatta is (unfortunately) also scheduled for the weekend of July 13 & 14 in Newport RI. I have always enjoyed this great event which features dozens of one design classes from all over the US and even the world one-design scene. You can check out their NOR at Newport Regatta
The New England Championships are scheduled for August 3&4 in East Greenwich Rhode Island. These folks always put on a first class event. You can see the notice of race and even register and pay online at a secure sight by going to New England Champs You even get a nifty brass keychain with a JY15 profile engraved with your name and boat number on it!! (but only if you sign up online before July 26). I just had to get one of these collector items so I'm already signed up.
That's all for now - I'll let you know more as I get the info.
News from the FleetsThe Richmond Yacht Club on Staaten Island NY is one of the classes newest fleets. This month fleet captain Doug Olsen reflects on one design racing old and new at Richmond YC ...
Frostbite "Back to the Future"
The following two articles from 1950 and 2002 demonstrate that as much as things change, they also remain the same, when the subject is frostbite sailing in Great Kills Harbor. The first article is a reprint from the 1950 Penguin Class Dinghy Association Yearbook; the second is a new article about Richmond County Yacht Club’s upstart JY-15 dinghy fleet that was chartered last fall 2001.
Over 50 years have passed between articles; however, it is interesting to note the following things remain the same:
- Great Kills is an excellent harbor for Frostbite Racing
- A relatively dry 2 person dinghy is the right boat (i.e. JY-15)
- Dinghy racing is the best way to learn to race and crew (I would even argue sail)
- Post Race socializing is 50% of the fun
- Interclub racing and regattas are integral to the growth and success of any fleet
From the past - Richmond County Penguin Fleet – No. 5
We have just finished the second annual Deep Freeze Regatta here in Great Kills harbor. There were 24 contesting boats including such notables as Ruynon Colie, Dick Sheehan, Allan Clark (who finished in that order) and many others. The weather was excellent with a strong 15-20 knot breeze, Saturday January 28, and moderating breeze on Sunday, which tended to minimize anyone’s weather advantage. There was an informal party at the Richmond County Yacht Club on Saturday evening and a Clam Chowder for contestants on Sunday. Visiting contestants were overnight guests at the homes of local Penguin fleet and Yacht Club members. Everyone had a good time and we are looking forward to an even larger fleet next year.
Our fleet has grown beyond its pre war size and is characterized by good sailors, good sailing, and excellent spirit. Units of our fleet have attended the Eye Opener Regatta at Larchmont, the New Year’s regatta at Manhasset, the Deep Freeze here and other regattas on the Jersey coast and at Annapolis this Fall and Winter season. We have a local Fall Series which was won by Warner Wilcox, a winter Series on now, and a Spring Series to come and all are well attended with a range of 9-15 boats in each race. In a sense it is unfortunate that some fleets die out for one reason or another, but in our case it is not, as we have received many enthusiastic sailors from inactive fleets to swell our ranks. In addition, there will be about four or five new boats in our fleet next Summer and Fall, which are in the planning stage now.
Our fleet is known as the "Roving Caravan" here in the East for their mass movements to the various regattas. We enjoy them a great deal and would like to attend more, so please notify our fleet when regattas are being planned. Right now we are planning a trip to the Columbia Yacht Club regatta, February 18 and 19.

And the future - Richmond County JY-15 Fleet – No. 105
We have just finished the spring JY-15 frostbite series here in Great Kills harbor. There were 15 skippers participating and the final results were Paul Scalisi and Joy DeCarvalho, Doug Olsen and Chrissy Mahoney, Robert (Milo) Militello and Kelsea Christianse (who finished in that order) and many others. The weather was excellent over the course of the series with breezes from as light as 2 knots to as strong as 20 knots giving every competitor a chance to test his/her skills. There was an informal get together at the Richmond County Yacht Club after each week of racing as our steward Paul Caminiti prepared some fine grub for all to enjoy. Everyone had a good time and we are looking forward to an even larger fleet next series.
Our fleet is characterized by good sailors, good sailing, and excellent spirit. We have a local Fall Series, which was won by Paul Scalisi and Joy DeCarvalho in 2001, a Spring Series just completed, and a Fall Regatta to come and all are well attended with a range of 6-9 boats in each race.
In my nearly 30 years racing I have never seen such a combination of competition and cooperation coexisting in a racing program. We have had rotating boats, crews, skippers, and race committees, allowing all those involved to enjoy full participation in the "frostbite experience". I think we have all "rediscovered" the joy of small boat racing.
Thanks to Ron Neglia and Tom Reilly for documenting our many adventures in the cold, and Jerry Bertekap for providing the Crash Boat.
Look for the upcoming events:
- Possible Summer Night Series (TBD)
- 2002 Fall Series Sunday’s @ 11:00 AM from 10/6-12/22
- RCYC 2002 Fall Regatta 11/9/02
