2003 Mid-Winters Championship Update
JY Sailboats will run the regatta which
will be based at the Radisson Sand Key and Clearwater Sailing Center in
Clearwater. The
Radisson Sand Key is an AWESOME resort! Check out their pictures and virtual
tour by clicking the link. Here are the details:
Dates: Friday-March 7, Saturday-March81 and Sunday March 9.
Location: Clearwater, Florida. Host Hotel is the Radisson Sand Key which is
located right next door to the Clearwater Sailing Center.
The 2003 JY15 Midwinters is returning to Clearwater. This year we will try
something new with all activities to be at the Radisson Sand Key Hotel and the
Clearwater Sailing Center. These two facilities are located right next to each
other on the water and make it perfect for a family sailing vacation. We race
right in front of the Hotel so the non sailors can be enjoying the pool while
the racers are doing their thing. This year we are going to have the food at the
Hotel and Sailing Center so once you get there, you never have to drive.
Schedule is as follows:
Thursday March 6
Friday March 7
Saturday March 8
Sunday March 9
Registration:
Register with JY Sailboats at
dave@jysailboats.com (860-739-3033)
all we need is skipper and crew name. boat number. skipper age. $130. Fee
includes Thursday dinner, Friday dinner, Saturday dinner and Sunday lunch. Plus
the regular goodies.
Hotel information:
We have reserved 40 rooms at the
Radisson Sand Key. These are suites so two couples or a family can fit
comfortably in one room. All rooms overlook the water. Rate is $172 per
night. To reserve, call Hotel directly at 727-596-1100, ask for reservations,
say you are with JY15 Class Regatta to get special rate.
Please let JY know that you have reserved a room.
This event is going to be a great time and its a fun way to have a complete
family mini vacation. Busch Gardens is only a 45 minute drive so some of the
family can enjoy this while you are out sailing. Airline tickets are cheap
compared to the past right now but don't delay in making your flight
arrangements if you are going to charter.
Charters:
Charter boats are available to class members. Contact Dave to make arrangements.
In summary, the weather will be warm, the sailing fun and the food will be great. So come on down and enjoy the fun.
Class Update
Well another JY15 North Americans has come and gone. This was the twelfth championship since the class was founded in 1989 and 2003 found most of us older and wiser but still quite alive and active as a class. Thirty nine boats were registered for the regatta at the Wadawanuck yacht club in Stonington, Connecticut.Personally, I found the North Americans to be a very humbling experience. Some of those guys (and gals) are so fast it’s scary. Any delusions I had about knowing how to sail the boat well were left at the dock. I saw the leaders at the starting line and didn’t catch up to them again until the beer line at the Wad club. Oh well, it was a learning opportunity and if it weren’t for all the great friends I’ve made while learning to sail this boat, I guess I would have taken up golf years ago (At least they have a handicap in that sport).
Accomplishments in 2002
It’s been a successful year for the JY15 class. Thanks to the hard work of several individuals, we have accomplished a number of important things this past year.
Carol Fritz, our class secretary has gotten the class membership information in order. This is very important to class communication through e-mail and mailings and I greatly appreciate her efforts.
John Amendola, our web master has done an excellent job of redesigning and maintaining our web site which is a very important resource for communicating information and provides a discussion forum for members. Next year we will continue to add to content and improve on our site. Send John your suggestions.
Prescott Littlefield, chairman of the technical committee took the lead in assembling the new tuning guide. Members are always interested in hearing what the top sailors are thinking and the new guide’s "consensus" approach was a great way to harvest the combined experience of some of the best. In 2003 we plan to update our class rules and consider some new issues such as an update to the sail design. You can also contact Prescott through the web site with suggestions.
Thanks also to the class council members Mark Kondracky (Northeast), Dave Hoye (Southwest), Dave Woolschlager (Southeast) and Gary Edelman (Midwest) for their counsel and promotional efforts on behalf of the class.
Finally, I think the problems of communication of regatta schedules have been largely addressed through both keeping the web site current and the new e-mail newsletter. The regatta schedule was very active this past year with 35 different events listed on the class web page. Six district championships were held around the country with a total of 72 boats participating and 38 boats turning out to sail the North Americans.
Membership
We are up in membership this year with 225 paying members. Like the stock market, we experienced a bubble during the mid 90’s when 500 or more sailors would send in their dues. I’m convinced that the decrease we’ve experienced in the past few years is not because of a lot fewer people sailing JY15’s. As I traveled to the different regions, sailing enthusiasm and the number of JY’s on the water was always much greater than the number of paying class members. Our class council met during the North Americans to discuss this problem and decided that we needed to improve the benefits of joining the class. With the strong support we have from JY/Hunter Marine, we were able to come up with some really exciting new benefits. Starting immediately, all new memberships for the 2004 sailing season will receive:
As Dave put it, (in his usual under-stated style) "you’d have to be a moron not to join the class with all these benefits". He’s right, I think we actually lose money with each new member. But not to worry, we’ll make it up on volume.
We are fortunate to enjoy the strong support of Dave and his team at JY/Hunter. But your individual support of the class through membership is also important. This makes it possible for us to keep alive the communication which is so vital to a successful class organization. I have really enjoyed serving as your class president for the past year and look forward to your support in 2003 as we continue to build an even better class.

2003 North American Championships
The 2003 NA's are scheduled for October 3,4,5 at the Rush Creek Yacht Club near Dallas Texas. Southwest District representative Dave Hoye and fleet 69 are real excited about the opportunity to host this event and promise a great party. I traveled to Rush Creek this past spring to sail in the Southwest district championships. ( see the May E-news on the web site under "Articles") They have a great location on a reservoir with no power boat chop and no current!
Other Regattas
Just a reminder that the Richmond County Yacht Club (new fleet 105) will be hosting a JY regatta November 9th. Registration is at 9:00am with the first race at 11:00. E-mail or call Doug Olsen at 718-356-4120 for details This is the last regatta posted on our web site schedule but there may be others that I am unaware of. Please e-mail me and we will get out the word.
Meanwhile we are in the middle of a very active JY frostbiting season here in the Northeast with fleets in Essex and Stamford CT, Great South Bay and Richmond NY. There may be other active fleets that I am not aware of. Please e-mail me to let me know what you are doing and we will pass the word along. The JY is an excellent "off-season" boat for those sailors who want to keep their skills honed while the big boat is in storage. Even here in the frigid North we can sail from March to the end of December. Why not join us or get something started in your area?
