Dear JY Owner’s,

Costs to JY costumers have prompted this notice to JY15 and Hunter 140 (formerly JY14) owners. Boats in late warranty and just out side of warranty have developed cracks at or around the chain plates and bow. In our on going commitment to our costumers, JY Sailboats has developed a reinforcement kit for these points. The kit consists of three stainless steel straps that back up the existing reinforcement. Repairs resulting from a break at these points range in price from $400 to $500 dollars. Reinforcement kits will be made available for a limited time at cost $25. Warranties as a result of this problem will not be honored effective January 1, 2002 in cases where reinforcement is not installed.

Installation of the reinforcement kit is a 20-25 minute job. It requires a wrench, Philips head screw driver, drill, and silicone. The U Bolts holding chain plates and stem head in place are removed and reinstalled with reinforcement strap behind them. Using strap as a template holes are drilled in the hull. Silicone is applied to holes and screws are installed. JY will be sending people to major regattas and select club’s to perform installation free of labor cost.

For owners not interested in purchasing the reinforcement other preventative maintenance can be used to avoid a big bill. Regular checks of these areas especially if the boat has been in a collision or left tied to a dock unattended may help you catch the problem before it becomes a major one. On the JY15 storing the boat with the rig tension lever in the off position. Not using the head stay as a mooring point or a tow point. Finally removing mast and storing boat for winter months is highly recommended.

JY15 STEMHEAD & CHAINPLATE RETROFIT INSTRUCTIONS:

This kit will provide new reinforcement for the stemhead and side stay chainplates ("u"-bolts) by allowing you to use a stainless strap to tie the hull to the deck at the stem and the sides of the boat.

  • Included:

  • 3-stainless straps

  • 9-#10x1" tapping screws

  • 4-m8 metric locknuts

  • 2-1/4-20x1" machine screws

  • 2-1/4-20 locknuts

  • 2-1/4" flat washers

  • Tools Required:

    • Phillips screwdriver

    • Drill

    • 3/32" Drill bit

    • ½" and 7/16" Deep socket

    • Ratchet handle

    • Sealant: 3M 5200, Sikaflex 291 or equivalent

  • Procedure:

Bow:

  1. Remove and discard 2 locknuts, machine screws and aluminum backing plate.

  2. Put sealant on new machine screws, insert through stemhead fitting, put sealant on the back of one strap, slide the strap over the screws and install washers and tighten locknuts. Hint: The bolt holes in the strap are slightly elongated so you may need to tap the strap one way or the other to center it on the bow.

  3. Use the 3/32" drill bit and drill 3 pilot holes for the screws. Tighten the screws from the top down while holding the strap against the hull. Don’t over tighten and strip the screws, you’re going into plastic and foam!

Side:

  1. Remove nuts, stainless backing plate and aluminum back-up tube from the "u" bolt. Discard the nuts and the back-up tubes.

  2. Put sealant on the back of the strap and the top where the "u" bolt will go through. Slide the strap over the "u" bolt and tighten the locknuts.

  3. Use the 3/32" drill bit and drill 3 pilot holes for the screws. Tighten the screws from the top down while holding the strap against the hull. Don’t over tighten and strip the screws, you’re going into plastic and foam!
